Advisory Board

Nail’s service to the profession includes serving as a reviewer for dozens of manuscripts at academic journals, and he has served on the program committees for major academic conferences. He served on the board of directors of the Eastern Finance Association and the Southern Finance Association, CFA Society of Alabama, and Risk Management Association of Birmingham. He is a past member of the CFA Society of Dallas-Fort Worth and the Fort Worth and San Diego chapters of Financial Executives Institute. Nail also served as the founding chairman of the advisory board of the Texas Tech University Innovation Hub and as a board member of the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA) and Market Lubbock.

Receiving eight teaching excellence awards, Nail was also recognized as a best practices in teaching professor by Thomson Publishing (now Cengage) for his use of technology in teaching finance. Prior to joining UTRGV, Nail served as dean of the Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University, the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University, the College of Business at the University of Southern Mississippi and as chair of the Department of Finance, Economics, and Quantitative Methods at UAB. He is responsible for securing over $75 million in philanthropic funding at the institutions where he has served.

Nail received his Ph.D. in finance with a minor in economics from the University of Georgia in 1996 and his B.S. in finance with a minor in economics from the University of Alabama in 1989 – graduating first in his class. He spent three years in industry as a mortgage-backed and asset-backed bond consultant for Ernst & Young National Consulting Group from 1989 through 1992.

He took early retirement in 1992 and, along with a partner, started a technology company furnishing software for the operation of service companies in the automotive industry. Customers included chains of tire, muffler and brake stores. The company was sold to an international company in 2013.
Doyle has a BBA and MBA from the University of Memphis and took post masters work in accounting at Miami University.

Michael’s clients span a broad range of industries, having a particular concentration in the biotechnology, digital, aerospace, and defense markets. With his expansive industry knowledge and diverse client base, Michael is frequently handling cross-border issues related to mergers, acquisitions, defense and aerospace industry requirements, and the transfer and licensing of intellectual property, as well as other types of business matters. He has experience advising companies and individuals on federal, state, and local tax issues, and small business owners on business succession issues, including the structuring and financing of employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs).

He was selected to serve as the 2017 Chairman of the Southeastern Business Law Institute. Michael received his LL.M. from Boston University, and he holds a J.D. from Cumberland School of Law (Samford University) and a B.A. from the University of the South (Sewanee).
